Challenge

Chris, CEO of CoderCred, was initially looking for a consultant to build a strong financial model to support his fund raising.

However, from his initial discussion with the consultant, it seemed that the overall storyline (what products CoderCred is building and why) was still being refined and not evolved enough to translate it into financial forecasts. Chris also expected that investors required a more sophisticated financial model than necessary for a seed fund.

The consultant was able to recognise this imbalance, due to his significant experience working with startups.The consultant offered to spend less time on the financial model, and more time on the Strategy and Story, to be fully “investor ready” by the end of the project.

Solution

For the same budget, CoderCred and the consultant agreed on the following scope:

- Refine CoderCred Business Model and Strategy, through a couple of strategy workshops with Chris and his co-founders
- Build a simplified financial model that would meet the need of an early stage startup
- Support CoderCred in the creation of an investor pitch

In the weeks following the project, Chris was able to approach several investors and pitch his company with a strong story and financial forecasts.

Fred has an accumulated experience of ~10 years building financial models and advising business leaders on their strategic questions. He has spent 5 years at Bain & Company and 4 years at Telstra as a Strategy Manager.

He is passionate about startups and technology and has been working with dozens of tech startups over the last 4 years, as a Mentor, Investor and Consultant. He even co-founded one in the recycling education space.

He particularly helps startups to grow and raise funding by supporting them in the following areas: investor material preparation; business plan and financial forecasts; growth strategy; product and pricing strategy
